As a Canadian we are similar in many ways but I do find it strange how many Americans define themselves by the jobs they have and the big things that job allows them to buy. Our productivity is statistically way lower but I think it's just because we're more chill about that stuff 😅

your one fundamental freedom is the ability to decide your career. anything and everything is ultimately justified if it helps advance that career. pushing back against this or proposing any alternative to this is a fundamental threat to your ability to exist that must be attacked at all costs.

a big part of the reason people idealize childhood and their youth is because these are the times when they were still amorphously absorbing things and weren't so much defined by a singular idea. it's a lot better for your own sense of self worth and imagination to not be defined by one thing.

As self-defense I mentally categorize certain kinds of work as innately more transcendentally important because of how weird job culture in the USA can get.
