I'm not sure... years of experience I guess 'xD
but some general tips I can give are:
-don't be afraid of bigger and darker shadows on characters
-in most cases light orange/red/pink/purple shadow on multiply layer works best on human characters
-an easy "cheat" for more pleasing, saturated colors if you're using csp is layer->new correction layer->gradient map->sunset(purple) - this in overlay mode on low opacity
