Spend enough early to get a run off the ground but don't spend just because you've got the cash. Remember the interest that you get at the end of each round and consider skipping a blind if you'd have to spend more money than you would gain for the reward.
Jokers are almost always more important than cards or leveling hands, because the former can be multiplicative and the later is additive. Try to aim for end game with one chip scaling, one mult scaling and a few mult jokers.
