I mean, it's not just that it's strategically "beyond" them. It moves Canada in exactly the direction they never wanted it to go. Real regulatory power, real educational systems, democracies where everyone actually gets a voice, etc.

US defense manufacturers and their stock-holders are not exactly going to be pleased with Trump. US not prepared to step up in ‘foreign’ wars or NATO so reducing defense spend and other countries trying to avoid US equipment in favour of developing their own.

It would be helpful. But the EU has made clear there is a long list of applicants and one requirement is that a country be in Europe. Honestly, I think the best we can expect is to strengthen preferred trade and military partnerships.
