Good battery life for a handheld, good enough screen, access to so many more games. You can also buy the games at several online stores and activate them on steam. You can stream from your PS5 to this using a program called Chiaki.

The software allows for customization to extend battery life too, which is truly a game changer for playing indie games. The device itself is comfy to hold, as compared to the switch.

The only things i will tell people to do even if they dont want to mod is this:

Use the heroic app store to install:

ProtonUpQt -> To install ProtonGE (3rd party proton build with built in auto fixes for videos)

Heroic Games Launcher for GOG and Epic Games.

Thats about it.

Steam Deck is great for portability and rapid on/pause gaming as a new parent.
I just beat Red Dead Redemption 2 (last weekend, started on thanksgiving) by slowing chugging along a mission here and there.
It’s perfect for the last generation of games, older titles, and indie gems. Easy to use too

Steamdeck rules and I don't have to do much of anything to make sure it loads my games; there was, like, one game that I had to do a workaround for, but that's the exception, not the rule

It doesn't really take more than a half hour to set up but if you're interested in playing older console games it's really good for emulation, and emudeck will run almost anything you throw at it so it's really good for that!

Otherwise it's just nice to have almost your whole library on the go

Steam deck is a good idea for you. Like the other poster said, you can get a refurbished model and save some money. As long as you just want to play games on steam you're golden.

There are windows handhelds that allow you to play from other platforms but windows sucks for touchscreens

It's very plug and play for just playing games on steam. And most games these days are compatible. And if they're not, somebody figured out a control scheme to make them work and made it easy to find

Steam Deck is great, I buy a lot more from Steam sales now and lots of stuff is available, even if not verified, lots are playable (Metaphor was labelled "playable" and all my playtime is on the Deck). You don't need to mod it. It's been great for me to just pick up, play a bit and put down .

i've managed to try a lot more smaller indie games like this on Steam deck. I pick them up cheap during the sales and load up my Deck with them. When I'm feeling antsy I can fire one up and try it. Play will be most like the Switch, but you can get a dock and plug a controller into it if you prefer.

For every reason you've stated - do it.

Indies are wonderful on the Deck. I've enjoyed some of the tinkering with it I've done, but it's not necessary.

I still may not finish games but I definitely find more time to play them with that thing. 30+ hours of DA: Veilguard almost all on the Deck!

because they’ve labeled “Steam Deck verified” games it’s a little easier to treat it like a console, which should work well for you; the issue is of course that there may be smaller indie games you’d want to play where they understandably don’t have a Deck to test running it on, and so on

The thing is that "unverified" doesn't mean that much.

95% of the stuff i get on steam works out of the box on my deck AND my linux desktop.

But verification (if its up to date) will generally *be a good experience*

yeah I'm the same way! I love the steam deck tbh. I play it docked to my TV so it gives me the same experience as console playing, but opens up more games that I wouldn't really get around to otherwise. I don't dabble with mods, either, too busy/lazy. I've only found a few games not great on deck

It’s so easy to pick up and play, usually right from where you left off. And you absolutely do not need to tinker if you do not want to unless you’re trying to play unsupported games.

You can even use chiaki4deck to stream PS5 to your deck. That’s not a heavy tinker lift.

seconding all of this! i am still primarily a pc gamer but i use my steam deck a lot docked for when i would prefer to just sit on my couch and play something, and the variety of games i'm able to run on just my original 65gb LCD model is actually really impressive!!

64gb** lol. they don't make this model anymore afaik but since i mostly play docked i don't feel like i'm missing out by not going for the OLED and i just use a big microSD card for storage.

I would say if you stick with Steam-only games, it is plug n play 99% of the time.

that said, I *am* currently typing this as I wait for Prince of Persia to fail to load on my steam deck, but. I’m gonna blame ubisoft for that one

The steam deck is about that, a console. Beautiful screen and very plug and play. The touch pads are very useful. I know you mentioned the modding end, I'd still recommend an Ally X with Bazzite installed and a bigger Hard drive. 1/2

This is mainly due to the increased performance of the Ally X and ram increase, also with how big games are getting, you can get descent SSDs for it for cheap. And with Bazzite you can keep that nice plug and play console goodness of Steam OS.

i spent more time having to screw around with stupid stuff to get games working on the steam deck than on my desktop pc. i think i had to reinstall diablo 4 easily 5 times

i refuse to deal with that level of messing with linux, proton, compatibility layers, emulation, just to play a game

most everything I've played on steam has run without issue on the deck these days. things only get hairy for me if I'm trying to run some particular non-steam-native thing. like I still haven't gotten the exult wrapper for Ultima 7 working right on the deck. this is not a problem normal people see.

I sprang for the original run top of the line model because I had the funds and was functionally looking at it as my gaming computer for the next few years and it's been great for that. ideal platform for playing while the kids are asleep but you're in the room or holding them.
