My adaptation of Lear was 3 hours long…and I can’t image what else could have been stripped to keep its dual plots intact…

I loved his Lear I have to say – it’s by no means perfect but having seen many variations of the play, I can appreciate what he was trying to do –just to see him on stage (first time) doing Shakespeare tips it for me! I like the list. Conspiracy and Shackleton, though not Shakespeare, are two gems

Love this piece, thank you! Agree with you on his Hamlet—yet I will always love it. I'll never forget taking my father-in-law (who didn't know Shakespeare at all). He watched the whole thing carefully. At the end, he looked stricken. We asked what was wrong. He said, "I didn't think he would die."

Yes, what happened? He directed a terrific LEAR in 1990 (Emma Thompson/Fool).
Why he would butcher the greatest play written in the English language mystifies me.
