The Coastal Salish people have a ceremony every year for the return of the King Salmon. We thank our brother in the sea for returning. He then returns to the Creator and says that we thanked him and showed him our gratitude, thus encouraging our fish brothers to return again.
In giving our thanks, we must be sincere. This also includes how we treat other living things and the earth. When you stop protecting and caring for it, it stops protecting and caring for YOU.
So says the Creator.
2) The connection to the land is not one of ownership or exploitation, but of deep spiritual and reciprocal relationship. From an Indigenous perspective, this Mother Earth is not simply a resourceβshe is a relative.

O SON OF MAN!
I loved thy creation, hence I created thee. Wherefore, do thou love Me, that I may name thy name and fill thy soul with the spirit of life.
O SON OF BEING!
Love Me, that I may love thee. If thou lovest Me not, My love can in no wise reach thee. Know this, O servant.
