As someone 35 yrs with #MyalgicEncephalomyelitis whose Drs often struggle to provide compassionate care: "relieve doctors from an unrealistic sense of responsibility or failure, and to enable them to journey with compassion alongside patients whose suffering might fluctuate but will never fully go."

Supervision to “relieve doctors of an unrealistic sense of responsibility or failure” is what stood out for me.

Many of us are trapped in the false belief that it’s all about fixing people.

Realising it’s also about bearing witness and walking alongside others can be a relief.

I've spent much of my career developing approaches to peer supervision and systems to develop them see https://johnlauner.com. My perception has always been that Balint approaches are a beginning but they need to integrate the technical and systemic as well as the affective side of the work.

Baling still happens in our locality.

Some of John’s approach is used for the support groups for one of the salaried GP schemes. I’m excited to be taking this over from Sept. Got some reading to do.

Hello John & thanks for the BMJ article. Back in the ‘90s, we had a General Physician do an OP clinic at our cottage hospital; when he retired we noticed the referral/discharge revolving door syndrome worse . I’m not anti-specialities but I do miss those Internal Medicine Generalists.
