When media have questions about autopsy reports I may get asked for interviews. I don’t get paid and it’s only a few minutes out of my day so I do these interviews as a public service because I love explaining forensics.
It’s also good practice to put on makeup, get in front of the camera and think of ways of explaining things in sound bites they can use. When Working Stiff came out both @workingstiff.bsky.social & I went through media training
I just got the audiobook from the library, and am so happy it's read by Tanya Eby. I've listened to her voice for probably hundreds of hours, since she narrated one of my favorite series, Elfhome. It's like meeting an old friend.
I think the experience made me better at explaining my profession to juries too and I now recommend that anyone who works as a coroner or medical examiner get some media training as required professional development.
This skill is something that needs continuous honing and while I used to get really nervous, now I’m pretty comfortable in front of the camera. This time I was worried my recently dyed “tutti fruity” holiday hair might undermine my professional appearance but I think it worked.
