Not wholly correct. The user VoT savings achieved by moving from machines, ticket offices, etc. to contactless pay as you go has been included in the relevant business cases.

True but that's more about justifying contactless than reducing delay. Plus if you want to really reduce delay you get rid of ticket gatelines.

It's making improvements to the rail network which are justified using quantified tiny user journey time savings - it's absolutely the same as justifying a highways scheme based on reducing delay by a matter of seconds for a large number of road users. Or did you have a different comparison in mind?

Just for info; 2 issues I had
1) machine would not issue (Cheap) Day Return before 9:00,
I needed it for the 9:01 train
2)We were unaware that a Supersaver Ticket was available for another journey, a good discount on the Day Return Ticket
Luckily the ticket office staff advised us of this.

How much does it cost us all to do all the customer service which has been stripped out of retail, utilities, financial services etc. and re-repented to us as self service which will make our lives easier. It doesn't and it is a drag on productivity and growth which is not measured.
