Back when Sci-fi movies made no sense because they were trying to adapt novels that were vastly longer and more philosophically complicated, so they relied on wacky atmosphere and trippy settings.

It came out a year before STAR WARS, and was a hit. It got rotten reviews, but it won an Oscar for SFX, and cleaned up at the Saturn Awards.

It was a big factor in getting MGM out of debt.

STAR WARS rewrote the playing field for SF movies, but LOGAN'S RUN did very well by the standards of the day.
