In most countries in Latin America, women keep their own name after marriage. Regarding titles, though, we use Señora for married and Señorita for unmarried, but adult women are normally addressed as Señora (Sra.). We have yet to come up with the equivalent to Señor...

I use Ms. In most situations, marital status is irrelevant. In addition, I did not take my husband’s name. It would be weird to use Mrs. In front of my name. Sometimes we receive mail addressed to my husband with my last name.

I suspect the problem is rooted in the determination of many women to see marriage as a sort of prize or contest, and once they "win" it, they want to advertise it, or maybe just avert further unwanted attention, by switching from Miss or Ms to Mrs immediately upon getting married. Retain the Ms.

She is right, of course, and Ms was created in an effort to give women another option. I started using Ms around 1970, and kept my name when I married, so have continued to use Ms all my life. But women are under huge pressure to be seen in relationship to a man rather than as a person.

She would be correct if this was still the 1970s and earlier. But in the late 70s “Ms” slowly started to become popular to replace the marital statuses of “Mrs” and “Miss”. By the mid 1980s it pretty much became the standard to refer to women as “Ms” in an effort to equalize gender marital status.

Referring to a woman as Ms. IS equivalent to referring to a man as Mr. and they should be given that respect. Ms. is a neutral title to avoid referring to a woman as a condition of her marital status. The term was first used in 1901 and was popularized in the 60s and 70s.
