The NYT's phrasing is as dumb as saying gosh, your plumber relies on your money for HIS plumbing projects! What happens is the federal government puts out a call for research in some area, on YOUR behalf. Individuals then submit proposals to do that work. Like plumbers. 2/

It is baffling how the NYT article could be so backwards. The lead author assigned here usually writes on campaigns and elections. The 2nd reporter does education but apparently is stuck on admissions grievances and culture wars and hasn't bothered to learn what universities actually do. 3/

One problem with current "elite" media is that they hire too much from Ivy schools and so their reporters have a strange, overheated relationship to them that warps their reporting. But that doesn't explain Blinder who is from UA and should have more normal perspective.
