The Tagalog word for bottle cap, tansan, was derived from a brand of sparkling water that was first introduced in the Philippines in 1902. It was apparently the first product of its kind that used the bottle closure so familiar to us today.

Today, Asahi Wilkinson Tansan sparkling water is still sold in Japan where it was first bottled more than a century ago. It is now available, however, in PET bottles and not in the glass ones of yore.
