I can't see these names being adopted in the short to medium term. I certainly won't be insisting on their use.
Just keep in mind that creation of new names doesn't formally ban old ones. So whatever facilitates clearest communication is best.

At least ICTV continues to host all previous iterations of accepted taxonomy and search them pretty easily. Enteroviruses give me whiplash.

Ain't nothing wrong with naming any virus after where it was first observed. Stigma blah blah. Much like any treaty (and I'm in Utrecht, which has a famous one) or the Kyoto protocol - that recalls where it happened (first).
I'm not exactly sure what happened, but I get the impression that it was generally decided to ignore the new names.
