And one of them is closing our store and laying us off. Why? No ducking clue.
Our store has been in the top 50% of the company for the past several months and hit YTD profitable before Black Friday. We were average in all of our metrics for our district too.
Well, my personal suspicion is that it's the rent. We're in a very high traffic and visible part of town at a major intersection. There's no way the rent here isn't really ducking high!
But if that's the case, move us back to the mall! Rent is insanely cheap up there!
And yes, I do mean "back." They moved from the mall to the current location only 12 years ago.
All the major bus routes go to the mall and we're in a college town. We may even see an increase in business if we moved to the mall (and advertised the move).
I understand why they made the move 12 years ago. Malls were dying and I'm certain business picked up by moving to the current location. It was also during a period where the company had more money than they knew what to do with it.
Sometimes the internal messages we get from corporate about "saving money" really gives the feeling that they're really struggling to stay profitable and like the company may go under at any moment.
But I do think it'll be around for at least another 2 years or so - depends on the TCG market now.
that was my life growing up in the fifties and early sixties. my father worked for gm and was in the uaw. I could go to the emergency room and if it was within 24 hrs of injury it was fully covered.

Now, they're trying to save every penny they can.
