It’s not right. The American prison labor system was directly based on slavery, and the conditions are not meaningfully better than slavery.
Prison labor should be voluntary, fairly compensated, and reasonably safe. None of those conditions are being fulfilled here.

Sounds like a feel good story not realizing most fire departments don’t hire convicts and more aren’t paid a living wage so it’s an essential worker for now; like fast food workers during the pandemic. Follow them during the off season or next season to see the true value of their work.

These are volunteers. They are skilled at what they do and are generally led by prisoners who have earned the right to lead through learning and experience. They usually work in the very toughest areas and suffer more casualties and fatalities than regular crews. This is the very essence of repaying
