This is a lovely article.
Respect to you Jennifer for doing this sort of work.
So many people do not actually know what an architect does anyway. Esp ordinary folk who would benefit the most from good design & a professional assisting them.
They go to a builder who uses their pet draftie.

So true. Architects can save them money, but all I hear is oh they are too expensive! Maybe architects need a better comms team??

They definitely need a better comms team. Always have.
The AIA is the professional body representing architects & it does a good job supporting the profession internally but has never been good at engaging with the public, or promoting the profession to the public.

Building designers on the other hand have always been exceptionally good at engaging with the public & the building trade. So they are boosted, often well past their actual experience & knowledge.

Actually I think that is the same for other professional bodies. Mine, the ALIA, stood by and watched the destruction of my profession, and the AMA does little to make their members' work appreciated and supported.

The listening part of architecture is one of the most important along with involving clients in the process, we used 6 Degrees back in 1998 and they were fantastic at both those things, unfortunately they have grown to large to do small projects, so glad Jennifer has taken up the mantle
