Stop blaming the govt. Years ago we had govt. that ran housing comms. they built lots of houses not just for the poor but for everyone. I grew up in one both parents worked. Then we elected govt's that stopped building houses for everyone and everyone who owned a house made a killing and we loved it
Well it would also save most of our taxes being sucked by big cities Sydney especially for infrastructure and maintenance. No silver bullet for anything but be nice if just one politician just remotely mentioned it
I understand the principle, but regional areas don’t/wont have the infrastructure to support numbers of people fleeing expensive major cities. It also displaces local ppl who rent or want to buy, & destroys more bushland! New hospitals can’t be staffed so pointless.🤷🏼♀️Neither party have solutions.
Speaking personally as a renting aged pensioner, there is a “social housing” waiting list of at least 5 years and we don’t qualify for “affordable housing” (Only available to people that work).
I know people paying up to 70% of their pension in rent.
How do you shift the dial?
How do you flatten house costs?
Decentralise but you need employment. How do you get people to work? Infrastructure including fast rail.
One problem….. 20 year solution.
Sure and in that case we can have collectively owned (via govt perhaps or cooperatives) places available at cost price rent. No profit making from household rent to be allowed.
That is an extreme oversimplification of a complex problem
Building supplies have rising by a huge amount in the last few years
Supplies & labour are in short supply
Families are getting smaller, houses are getting bigger whilst capital cities have land shortages 1/
The biggest problems are a shortage of supply & especially in high demand areas in capital cities but also in rural areas
This problem has developed over decades & isn't going to be solved in a couple of years 2/2
...particularly when people say "This problem has developed over decades & isn't going to be solved in a couple of years" without giving a roadmap/timeline to achieve something resembling progress towards bringing supply much closer to demand.
No new neg. gearing on 2nd & subsequent inv. props now✔️
👏👏 Yep, legislated timelines. Two months from announcement to allow existing contract finalisations but not sprees. Have to grandfather all before. Not throwing hands up in air. A problem 30 years in the making as many say, but also continued in that time with increased housing inequality
So why are we all living in Capital cities ?
Australia is an urban coastal nation. In 2001, 85% of Australia's population lived within 50 kilometres (km) of the coast, but by 2019, that proportion had risen to 87% (ABS 2020b).
In the 1960s it was suggested that we should decentralise however centralising was more efficient & was Griener's policy amongst others NSW got has been decentralising to Parramatta *sigh
Coastal areas has more temperate weather Rural areas have a lot less infrastructure & much less inland
but if we are running out of room , shouldn't we be changing our stance from 60 years ago ? Why are we stuck in the 60's ? Why do we not have more fast public transport to regional areas , instead concentrating on fast travel in areas that can't grow ?
Investors are buying up everywhere so quickly!
They are flushing out Townsville rn, not a city one would imagine people would flock to (hot, wet, humid).
We need to cap house ownership stat!
Defence force is why. People who want to live of base privately and others would be looking to link into Defence housing. Of course Thebes all the feed in of supporting jobs. Townsville wisi had the uni and a lot of government jobs. It makes sense as relatively Townsville housing is cheap
No doubt. It's why we need a massive investment in social housing. I'm not sure if we have the materials, but we should be looking at borrowing various trades from South Asian countries. Indonesia, Malaysia, etc, to work under state building departments to build social housing.
We need new laws urgently i mean NOW .Give incentives to investors building new property not buying current housing.Christ think outside square governments put something on table

Sad to see her underwhelm. I'm wondering if she pushed Albo to abolish negative gearing and was ignored or simply lacks the spine to do anything...

Never, ever, trust anyone, developer or politician, to bring it in on a promise after an increase in density has been allowed in the General Plan.
Housing should not be for profit.
