It was intended as a wartime struggle meal, and we stopped when the privations of way stopped.

Sure, but otherwise I generally just don't understand the obsession with it, it's really not that bad especially if you butter the toast (with real butter I mean, not a spread), add some extra salt/pepper and maybe some spices, and reduce it in a pan a bit - I promise!
