this idea is wild to me bc even if you accept that premise, the most famous bad writers to come out of fandom were not getting coddled, they were getting earnestly praised lol. being nice to small amateur writers is not remotely the same phenomenon
We fanfic writers are out here writing FOR FREE in our SPARE TIME for little to no recognition or appreciation, and these fuckers are trying to police our goddamn quality like we're on the Times best seller list?
They can go fuck themselves with that shit. Omgawd.
Plus why does everybody have to improve their writing in the first place? Many do not aspire to become a published writer but simply write because they love to play with the characters and worlds they write about and hope others will have fun reading their stories. Nothing more, nothing less.
Absolutely! I'm one of those. I did it because my brain wouldn't leave me alone otherwise, but I wasn't out there with a goal other than to tell the story.
as someone in IRL writing groups and book clubs... it's bold to assume we all have the same tastes. the amount of times i've seen good writing get the most ridiculous criticisms and vice versa (praising stuff i think is awful) is ridiculous. nothing is universally loved or hated.
You're right, but on top of it, the initial assertion is just plainly untrue. My best friend has a higher word output than Stephen King at his cocaine-induced prime yet still manages consistent quality, another close friend has better prose than literally any other author I've ever encountered.
Many fandom writers are absolute masters of the language, but publishers wouldn't touch them because they're not writing shallow YA slop or the kind of zero-fantasy memoir-format sleeping tablets that are the only books boomers can take seriously.
