This was not recent. My recommendation would be to go the day after a storm. I have been there in the middle of storms too but it can be dangerous with flooding, road conditions etc...

Muir Woods is super touristy, unless you hike in.
Better to drive further north and go to Armstrong Redwood grove in Sonoma County.
Or if you're really adventurous go to Mendo or Humbolt.
