1) Trump now turns attention to Harvard-- this is a big bet of his administration: can he tame academic freedom or will universities actually defend what they stand for? Can he destroy America's capacity to develop knowledge freely?

2) But as Penn's David Asch writes here, if universities don't work together, they'll be picked off one by one. In a quote often attributed to Franklin, "“we must all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately."
3) As I wrote here, "when universities obey in advance, they sacrifice their highest value – academic freedom – to arbitrary power too easily...The issue is existential. To give in would be to become an extension of the authoritarian state that Trump appears to be building.."
