Really disappointing to see a wealthy private university pause admissions to a bunch of PhD programs including sociology. I suspect if this happened in a red state it would be bigger news and all over our timelines

I think the main reason it hasn't gotten a lot of press is that they're actively trying to hide it. When state universities do this they either can't do it in stealth mode or they're shouting it from the rooftops to signal their commitment to fiscal something or other.
Private school decisions have absolutely dominated discourse over the past few years. Graduate program admissions are decentralized here, thus there would never be a central communication strategy. I hate this myself, but we as faculty can't wish for budget increases.
it's interesting that the tidbits obtained by IHE suggests that the blame is being put on the grad students themselves for wanting fair working conditions.
