When recalling memories, participants showed a surprising "externalization bias" for imagined experiences, often reporting them to be perceived. 2/n

Interestingly, when people were not instructed in specific ways to guide their imagination in our task, they imagined words that were highly related to the given source (word). 3/n

Further, for imagined source memories, subjects had similar confidence when they correctly judged those memories as imagined, and when they incorrectly judged them as perceived. Both of these judgments had high confidence compared to when imagined memories were judged as new. 4/n

This indicates that source mixing may happen for imagined experiences! Interestingly, this doesn't seem to happen for perceived sources. 5/n

We also show that the association between confidence and accuracy may depend on the type of measure that is employed (within subjects vs. between subjects), and they may not point towards the same conclusion, despite both being used in the memory literature. 6/n
