The usual. They're giving accounts like NYT the ability to hand out checkmarks and appear to not have given a single trans person one yet. It's just another was to enforce ideological authority, but only theirs.
isn't every verification system just a chain of ideological authority? even https is just secured by everyone really trusting digicert. (actually now that i think about it i bet this system of theirs is set up similar to ssl certificates)
i actually kind of like the domain name system, because anyone can be verified by themselves, without relying on a central authority. but people from twitter kept complaining about not having checkmarks/official verified accounts and so i guess we got this :/
I mean, yeah, pretty much. There's a philosophical discussion to be had about people being too lazy to make judgements about who is trustworthy and then inviting someone to tell them who to trust and the problems with choosing any authority.
