I don’t think that you’re a total bore at all in asking this question. What I do find boring is the complete lack of transparency in Government (of either colour) to engage with the question and actually give an actual number rather than using all of the usual ‘Brexitisms’…will of the people etc

It's much worse than that.

We had to do stuff like replicate the centralised EU chemical regulator and then charge UK chemical companies to use and fund it.

All so we could largely just carry on sticking to EU regulations.

Don't get me wrong it was always a stupid idea and there are lots of sensible reasons it would fail but putting extra work on nearly everyone for no good reason is a big part of why it will always be less than was hoped.

The ripple effect not just to business directly affected but also to those businesses dealing with the directly affected, and so on up the supply chain, and the businesses ( eg sandwich shops, hospitality, etc) relating to the indirect suppliers… etc etc etc
