We loved playing the starter 'campaign' (I played Lobelia and it was GREAT), but being in actual campaign gradually ground us down. Not helped by a beautiful, but terribly designed, rule book.

I'm half way through running the third of five adventures from the starter set and have loved it! Players have made it, of course, and I've had to adapt a little, but it has a lot of calls to The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, which is what I want.

I know a lot of people like the starter, but as GM I found it just made me really cross - railroady, unnecessary rolls without consequences (or dead-ends), just didn't feel the mechanics matched the vibe.

Oh I agree with that. I don't think the mechanics are great...having two seemingly separate combat systems was confusing. And we abandoned the travel rules very quickly...FL mashing their system and tOR together and making a mess...

Had a lot of fun running the starter set, those pesky little hobbits 😁 it felt like the perfect, safe introduction but perhaps needs a self-contained adventure that bridges between this & the more sandboxy books e.g. Moria, as a GM I'm a little stuck on this point.

Ah, my bad. I'd been going over Moria & Ruins of the Lost Realm, so I thought they were all kind of adventure sites with background rather than a full on long form adventure.

Likewise had my doubts about the system in long term play, but after my current campaigns I was thinking of lining this up.

Lone lands fleshes out nicely with ruins. That's how I ran it anyway. Ruins fills in a lot of the key locations. Moria can be quite restrictive re group composition though id heard.
