One of our founders, @dunnjons.bsky.social FLS, leads several of our orchid tours across Europe, and unexpected hybrid finds are always greatly appreciated by him and our guests alike.
1. Roman Emperors had men scouting for certain types of orchids bulbs as weight for weight they are the most nutritious food on the planet?
2. The bulbs are testicle shape hence the name from Latin?
Etymology
The type genus (i.e. the genus after which the family is named) is Orchis. The genus name comes from the Ancient Greek α½ΟΟΞΉΟ (Γ³rkhis), literally meaning "testicle", because of the shape of the twin tubers in some species of Orchis.
I like the idea of this, even if it's not true!
