Made all the more so magical because all these were practical special effects.
The story wasn't great, the effects, the designs, the sets, the score however, all pure delight.

I was hit in my 1978 Sunbird on the way to see this. Put a dent in my right rear quarter panel which popped back out while I was talking with the guy who ran in to me. Makes this movie stand out in my mind. Mostly not worth it, but this part was amazing.

I've seen it probably 10 times and I love the movie. Maybe it lacks action and a memorable villain, but to me it captures the essence of Trek better than a lot of the movies.

As the only nerd in the family I got dropped off at age 8, wheelchair and all,to watch that movie on release. Definitely not the Star Trek I knew.
