I think the rumors about Spielberg having secretly directed Poltergeist are at least in part denigrating Hooper because Poltergeist rips so hard and Hooper was a grungy horror director and Spielberg is a big prestige guy so there’s no way the little guy could have done it.

Tobe Hooper's work in the '80s is criminally underrated. I can think of few directors in that era who made such big swings - every single production feels like the filmmaker trying to exorcize a whole new realm from his brain.
