ChatGPT doesn't "claim" anything, and it definitely isn't "factoring in" anything either. It is a system designed to output plausible-sounding text, given text as input. It is not answering questions, much less answering questions with respect to some knowledge base.

These so-called "AI" systems are loci of environmental destruction, and we need to tell that story. But in telling that story, it is also important not to reproduce the hype narrative that they are being sold with.

I'm reminded of Lucy Suchman's excellent 2023 piece on "The uncontroversial ‘thingness’ of AI". Suchman urges us, in critical work on "AI" not to cede the ground that "AI" is a thing at all.

More than a thing, to many. I live in Germany and I cringe at how many people here use the masculine pronoun when talking about ChatGPT.
