Went out tonight for a few drinks here in East Belfast. Amazing buzz about the place. People out in droves enjoying locally brewed craft beers. Genuinely reminds me of London ten years ago. Not that everywhere has to be like London (especially not in Ireland!!), but I do mean it as a big compliment. - ThreadSky

Because, honestly, it is not that long ago that I remember a very different feeling to this part of the city and it is amazing to see the transformation. If only housing were more accessible and affordable... But hopefully in time that will improve.

(Housing here is among the cheapest in the UK - but getting on the ladder in the most popular parts of the city is very hard for young people given average salaries here.)

Anyway I don't mean to go on about housing lol, my point is that Belfast is having a moment.

I don't know the city well but in 2009, we wandered around downtown Belfast in the evening and it was perfectly enjoyable. It was surreal that the "troubles" still existed only a few years earlier.

The fact that you can go out for a drink at all in east Belfast is progress! I can remember when the only bars were ones that nobody sane would set foot in, and you had to go to the university area—sorry, “Queen’s Quarter”!!—to socialise.

(Even the city centre was a no-go area at night. In the late 90s it was a novelty to go into town after dark!)
