Colorwork socks can tend to be a little tighter because of the floats on the inside of the work. By knitting them inside out, the floats are carried along the outside of the work, helping with tension so that they'll be a little stretchier, and easier to get on your foot.

I've made 4 pairs of socks and am still figuring things out.
But inside out would not occur to me.
