I had forgotten this about Paul Krugman. It was exceedingly rare to have prominent voice in mainstream media circles opposed to the Iraq war. As s college sophomore, I appreciated it.

I always appreciated him much more for his political takes than his economic ones. Not that I disagreed with him all that often on either front. But it's quite the feat for an economist. I'll miss him in The Times.
yeah he wanted double the investment in infrastructure and understood you could borrow for so cheap and then was the time to invest. Obaman failed because he wouldn't go far enough and toe the line way too much to make a difference for most
The general vibes in those early to mid 2000s were so rancid, any person who was not actively dressed in flags & calling for the Middle East to be nuked to the stone age was a huge reassurance that basic sanity still existed
He has been right on basically everything since 2006. He held firm on austerity being stupid in 2008, and was right about the supply side causation with inflation. He even understood the subprime mortgage issue before most.
He basically was the only one who called out supply side economics and Milton Friedman for being BS. I loved how he never backed down from people calling for austerity in 2008 and knew you need to grow your way out of deficits not cut spending and further shrink your economy.
Also appreciated that Krugman way back in the Bush era acknowledged economics does not exist in a vacuum, which did not seem to be a mainstream opinion at the time.
