I was genuinely surprised to hear a CBS News broadcast tonight which was like 7 minutes about mass deportation, and Garcia specifically. People harangued Chuck Grassley about it!

I don't think the administration had any idea how much this would piss people off.

They've made clear (in a filing today) that if they have to return him from El Salvador, they're just going to detain him here and remove to some *other* country, or stubbornly try to prove his order preventing return to El Salvador is invalid. He may never be free in America to speak out.

Legally they can deport him to a "*safe*" 3rd country. (The fiction that CECOT is "safe" for Venezuelans hasn't been litigated yet.)

And they would redouble this PR disaster for the Miller administration. He could speak out from wherever. His wife/son are still US citizens, can visit whenever.

Not 100% certain about CECOT and "safe" 3rd countries. Not a lawyer. My understanding is this 3rd-country deportation a/k/a trafficking is legally viable only when the 3rd country is safe.

I've entertained the thought as well but I feel like if he were dead, the regime would just come out and say it at this point just to put it all to bed. There'd be a few days of outrage, then everything would be back to normal, day to day American-style nothing-matters fascism.
