I don’t normally work with dwarfing rootstocks, but in 2021 I grafted a load of French cider apple varieties onto Bud 9 to make a test spindle garden. I've 10 B9 & 10 B10 on order for this spring, with plans to stoolbed 3 of each, one each to replace my Muscadet de Dieppe trees that failed in 2023, and the other twelve are going onto a diagonal cordon of various - mostly cider - cultivars. It's all rather exciting, somewhat nerve-wracking 🤣

Always good to try things out 🙂 I’ve never tried cordons. I made a mistake here, too many varieties. May take out the ones that are not growing and replace with De Diepe. Have a few scions now.

I put in a couple varieties that, in hindsight, I don't really care too much to have, so will be topworking them over time. I say this with the caveat that I'm completely new to grafting and diving in headfirst.

It’s very easy to start off and want to graft everything and its sister. 😁 I know I find it hard to hold back, but at some stage you have to pick a focus, or direction. At least for me, this year I have to hold back. But it’s great fun when you start.

In the rows of the same test garden, I stuck some spare Pyrodwarf rootstocks into the ground in 2022. They went a bit wild. Pydrodwarf has amazingly sharp thorns (actually growing tips), a throwback to its wild ancestors. I’ll graft something onto them this year.

I just cut these off a very small Coppy tree in the nearby nursery, so might just try Coppy on Pyrodwarf. Also have a few Flakey Bark scions. 🤫

I should have done this from the beginning. Those wires don’t actually support the trees, and the bamboos inserted when planted gave way two years ago.

This year I am going to try grafting g41 as an interstem onto m111. Not sure what scion yet, I’ll leave that to be a next year problem.

I am not sure if it is common, I just started grafting last year and have a tight strip of space along a couple of fence lines to experiment with so I thought I would give it a go. Nothing to lose but a couple of dollariedoos!
