The normalisation of monetisation is so upsetting to me, especially since we can directly compare to how it was 20-15 years ago
You didn’t need a shop in Quake 3 bc there were countless amazing maps and skins made by the people. Quake Champions is a walled garden of monetisation. As Diablo 4 vs D2.

I have played and enjoyed F2P games (and worked on some too) and the monetisation always tends to rub me the wrong way
Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament or Vice City are complete games, snd the mods are there for pure creativity
Though it's not a reliable foundation for a business strategy imo :)
Choice is key here.
Thankfully many gamers have figured out to blame the publisher for these decisions, not the regular folks making the thing.
all community-driven. we all bought the game, we got the tools. we were learning, having real fun, too

Btw I’ve been delving into old CS, especially Source - and I’m very happy to see Gamebanana (formerly FPSBanana) still working. It’s a blast to just download a bunch of cool maps and play some rounds.
But I feel like “don’t like it - don’t play it” is a passive stance towards the monetisation tendencies, and instead we should be actively opposing it
I loved the game play, but I hate how egregious the monetisation was.
And that shop and battle pass in Diablo 4 were such a turn off for me. It’s always there in the game menu, right beside the map screen too.
DAMN I downloaded Diablo 4 over the free weekend and seeing all that money and effort and ferrying towards the premium currency shop put such a heavy pit in my stomach that I couldn't bring myself to keep playing
