This might be rude of me to say, and also partially obvious, but messages like those come off as attention seeking and lazy. To me a random "hi" translates to "pay attention to me, talk to me, but I don't want to put effort in to our interaction"

I always assume those are bots when I get those; my discord account has probably about 100 message requests that are variations of "Hey", "How are you" ect in the spam and I just keep that as the mindset

I think part of it is the difference between synchronous and asynchronous communication.

When people were sending letters to each other, they wouldn't say "hey". They would get to the point. You don't send an email that just says "hey" either.

People treat DMs like casual talk instead of a message

In person, someone can say "hey" as an attention-grabbing tactic. It informs that a conversation is about to take place, and they are getting you ready.

But that's not needed with a message. You inherently know a conversation will happen simply because you have something in your inbox.

Sometimes I genuinely don't have the energy to respond to someone but I usually get back to them the next time or if they leave a follow up thing like asking me or wanting to chat. A lot of times I'm just NOT in the mood to talk.
I don't like when artists hate DMs with "hey" though. It feels mean.

I honestly don't even have the energy or time to respond to these kind of messages anymore so I just tend to ignore them, esp when like... 80% of the time these conversations just end up going nowhere lol

This could be so easily avoided if they just said "Hi" or w/e along with what they wanna ask
