oh my gosh, The Butchering Art book by @drlindseyfitz.bsky.social is so fascinating! So well-told and oh my goodness. I knew germ theory didn’t come around until after the Civil War but I didn’t realize how much work it took to convince people!

Not to worry. ‘Merica is about to learn about germ and virus theory all over again. Education just never rests…..I think it’s cyclical. May come every 4 years or so.

I’ve read the odd article so I’m tangentially aware of the story, and the doctor who pioneered the surgery, but looking forward to the long form narrative.
I have no idea how teaching works, but I would have loved a history teacher who was able to get me enthused to read more widely on relevant subjects, so if there’s a way you can…
I say this as someone who had two English teachers who loved that their students read widely, and were always open to discussion, even with us as 14 year olds. My favourite English teacher wasn’t even English

A good complementary book to this would be "The price for their pound of flesh". Especially the final chapters that illustrate using the bodies of exhumed Black men and women for early American dissections; as well, the Black individuals who were made to rob their graves.
