I think the issue is more that they really do want him leading HHS and really want a major shakeup their way. This is horrible and will have long term consequences in both US and elsewhere but also I don't see them picking a replacement that would not do just as horrible things.

They'll just pick somebody just as awful about vaccines and science generally, but who doesn't have weird brain worm and bear baggage. Also the replacement won't even pretend to care about healthy food and the environment like RFK does.
