I don't think you're wrong, and I'm struggling with it myself—not enough hours in the day right now (plus, resistant to the concept).

For whatever it's worth, I paid attention to the Cracked by-lines back in the day & cared & noticed folks' topics and style. But... I'm a weirdo.

I've written something in the neighborhood of a dozen novels and none of them sell unless I'm actively promoting them. It's literal years of work and has garnered me, at most, hundreds of fans.

Got more "success" via a narrative design video on a 40 year old video game that took off for no reason.

At this point I'd rather just have a salaried job in game development than be an occasionally successful author. I feel old and fragile.
