We'll probably never make meaningful progress thru any bans that requires hourly labor to put up with grown people consistently throwing full on, sometimes violent tantrums over feeling mildly inconvenienced
Nuanced problems will always take time. Whether it's the time it takes to create a nuanced solution, or the time it takes to clean up after the motherfucker who Gordian Knots their way through the problem.
I've only seen one paper straw, ever, but it was recent, last fall at a rest area in New Jersey. It was a horrible straw. California is the one who ordered the change to straws. It's why now there are better, compostable straws at 7-11/Speedway, nationwide.
There is a field nearby that is still county land surrounded by town. They grow seedlings for reforestation. Every so often they treat the field with something that requires the entire farm to be covered with plastic sheeting all glued together.
Then they throw it away. Acres of the shit.
Yes, plastic straws are a problem because we throw away enough every year to fill Yankee Stadium. They can't be recycled because manufacturers make them out of different types of plastic.
Solution: Mandate they be made of 1 type of recyclable plastic.
I'm in Los Angeles and have gotten many paper straws. The earliest ones kind of got soggy but since this was a pretty trivial inconvenience in life I just didn't mind it much. Then they came out with a 'mk 2' paper straw that stayed solid way longer and I think it's very good
you must not live in CA,,, or rlly any of those crunchy West Coasters. i became accustomed to carrying around my metal straw so i wouldn't have to deal with paper
The worst was Subway with their super thick and hard plastic lids.
The spot you punched through would be sharp and firm. As the straw got soggy, it would crush it inward.
Unable to move the straw up or down or move it inside the cup to stir.
Absolutely useless.
Y'know who has good reusable cutlery? You do at home, but it would be "weird" to bring it with you to eat, rather than disposable stuff, right? Make it someone else's problem?
Why do we need straws? Drink from the cup like an adult (if you're able, if not then please use whatever you need comrade)
Where I live I've only seen them at the sort of environmentally-conscious places that serve organic vegetables and have their own solar panels. So generally I'm like, why did you go to that place if you're the type of person who's going to bitch about paper straws?
I've yet to see even one paper straw. The metal ones are nice but we can't go reusing shit now. That's like walking up to the Cross and punching Jesus in His Buts. Or something. MORE PLASTIC! THERE IS INFINITE PETROLEUM!! EVEN IF WE RUN OUT ON EARTH, THE MOON, MARS, AND VENUS MUST HAVE SOME TOO!!!
some ppl have disabilities that make it hard for them to lift the drink to get the liquid to their mouth. also, it's not productive for you to imply that just bc one thing doesn't work, it needs to be done away with completely instead of improved upon
Yes but the disabled community isn't who we're talking about here. No we don't need straws if we're able, doesn't that eliminate the problem completely?
that's still running away from an issue that will always be there instead of working towards engineering a solution. This is the issue within the intersection between research/science and government: ppl like you place blame on strongly established consumer behavior rather than offering actual solns
And we don't place blame on the consumers we place blame on the establishment that does not offer alternatives because they won't make money off of them. We put the blame on corporate greed.
i agree! Many are "dont do it" or "do FAR less" (like plant-based eating to reduce agricultural-related emissions). What you suggested ARE real solns. IM saying that telling ppl to stop using straws completely is unrealistic, and companies should instead be privy to invest in sustainable materials
I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm just saying, people never really question where the tops of soda cans have been, but we sure drink straight from them real fucking fast.
If more people realized just what they put in their mouths, many things would be different in the world.

These fools have no appreciation of the world they live in and the need to protect her.

Bamboo made into materials like flooring is extremely toxic, I can imagine cutlery wouldn't be much different, especially in mass quantities.
We should just use our own. Make it our problem instead of someone else.
Is redesigning homes to rely less on infrastructure running?
How about "reduce, reuse, recycle" rather than just producing waste 'because that's what we do'?
Many solutions are "don't do it"
Here's a solution that maybe you can get behind:
If more people realized just what they put in their mouths, many things would be different in the world.
Less kids, or more?
I was really hoping this wasn't a typo and you were going to start discussing origami cats.
