The other thing that makes Don Draper a great character is that he literally stole his name from someone else. He is literally, as you point out, a mask with no face behind it.
I also read this show as a portrait of how the entertainment industry works, and how it has influenced societal growth (or the dumbing down/cheapening of it).
Exactly this. So many men missed the point as Jason's describing it. I loved the show, but Don was a shell of a husk of a man. The very antithesis of integrity.
