My brother's home was destroyed in the Camp Fire in Paradise, CA. It was one of the saddest things to see him come back and dig thru the debris for bits of his past.

I am so sorry. I have seen it in Laguna, Woolsey, and now Palisades and Altadena. It is heartbreaking. The fact that the entire palisades burned even through town is unimaginable - most of it was insurance rated a 0-1 risk of burning - the lowest chance.

The "soil" is rubble in places, & climbing in to collect is dangerous & physical... sharp metal, rusty nails, glass, everywhere.
When I find whole objects I leave them in a mailbox or at the curb.
These were mid-century espresso cups, dishes, a huge set crushed/melted, + a painted, signed tile 🌱 🧵…

Homeowners had been sorting the archaeology, also. My family lives in New Mexico and when I saw piles and piles of crushed melted dishes, I couldn’t help but think of the Indian pottery shards our state has buried everywhere. More photos… 🧵

My new #beekeeping mentee, Oliver, a high school student whose school, home, & community are gone. Oliver found frames from his hives. Sadly, honeybees don’t fly from fire or floods… and how could they fly in 80-mile winds…. I was SO grateful for Oliver and his mom’s help. 🌱 🧵… #Bees #Beekeeper

This is what the “soil” looks like inside the foundation. Sometimes determining where the inside of the house even is, isn’t easy. I am sore from the climbing yesterday. Off to Altadena today.
Then a LOT of spreadsheet time to organize photos and markup so data is easy to follow with samples. 🌱

Here’s some hope for gardeners: what tree was alive in EVERY site? Citrus. Even when everything else was burned all around, even with charred fruit - the wood was alive on every single one. Choose citrus if you want trees in fire risk areas folks, and you get fruit too.

What will be the upside of this event? Will there be a: "From all bad comes good"? (my brother mowed over a burning bush at my my mom's place **how does this happen?!!** a space was left empty until it wasn't - it grew back & 3X's the height of others. A meaningful lesson.

I wanted to pot up every living thing & leave on the curb for families to have a piece of their garden. I couldn’t sampled 1,000 homes… the devastation is massive. But narcissus was peaking out & birds were all announcing spring carefree, despite the ruins for miles. I also found ants & worms! 🪱 🌱

My dad did his residency on the Hopi reservation in the mid 70s and had a nice little collection of sand painting, kachina dolls, pottery and prints at their home in the Palisades. Have found some pottery but obviously most is lost.
