What I see are political APPARATCHIK (loyalists) at each institution such as the Soviets had. Not only at institutions of learning, but at legal offices, businesses, etc. The elites are afraid of losing their status so the lose everything.

Universities like Columbia, with enormous financial endowments and affluent, elite alumni communities, have the ability to stand up to Trump and choose not to.

This will prove disastrous for small and mid sized public colleges and HBCUs, who don't have those advantages.

I remember when Columbia's students invited me to join in their takeover of the administration building as a representative of the University of California student body during the National Student Strike after Kent State. It was known to be more committed than Harvard, Yale, Penn, NYU. No more.
