Properties like Star Wars and Star Trek were best when the characters didn't behave in-universe like they were hyper-obsessed Star Trek and Star Wars fans.
Sci-fi is best when it's whizz-bang pulp adventure in space, or an allegorical look at contemporary society though a futuristic lens.

It has its problems like the characters acting like Star Trek super-fans, but for me there's three main things that made it a bit more watchable than other spin-offs I didn't like.
I think if it was the only Star Trek being made, I'd probably feel more disappointed by it.
The world of Star Trek is ultimately pretty absurd, and having the show highlight that but just carry on as if it wasn't kinda charmed me. It felt a lot like the early days of the Star Trek Shitposting FB group.
It wasn't diversity or 'woke' that killed these franchises, it was ultimately capitalism.
