That passive exposure design is interesting. I understand it as "bait and switch" from entertainment to news? people stop paying attention at the switch or tune out, so the effects on knowledge / opinion / etc are weak. Is that how you understand the paper?

Yeah I think so. And obviously their focus is on learning rather than attention or persuasion but you could also compare different "news breaks" to see which ones decreased tuning out (ie captured attention), then look at the joint affect of attention + persuasion.

Yes — the amount of learning varies depending on how we embed news for those preferring entertainment (& also likely on the substance of the news content) …

Spitballing some experimental designs to capture attention, what about a framework where content plays on one side of a window while respondents perform another task on the other side (perhaps one where success is incentivized) to see which content is most effective at pulling r's away from the task
