I really, really want you to read the whole Terror Danjah piece, and I really, really want you to think about how it relates to the thing I wrote about DOERS.

It's taken me years to work out what my approach is, and why I get wound up by people trying to impose theoretical bounds onto culture...

And this. I grew up when gatekeepers really did define the canon. I loved the stories in the music press, but I got quite pissed off as I realised how partial they were.

Obviously the info glut era changes that, but then we're at risk of throwing the baby out with the bathwater...

We question what culture critics are even FOR when everything is available all at once, but of course the DOERS, the DJs, the curators, demonstrate all the time that it's about providing windows into living culture, and about being in conversation with that culture: hence these profiles.

And reporting - personalised, partial, opinionated, well-expressed reporting - from events and spaces as they are happening still has value. It's why, I realise, theartsdesk is still precious, because its reviews reinforce signals, strengthen synapses, sustain the circulatory system of the culture.

And this convo with Terror Danjah - the experience of transcribing and footnoting it, being in Forest Gate as he gestured towards where X record shop, Y club or Z mate's house were from where we sa - has been a driving force for me ever since I first did it. His knowledge and passion MUST abide.
