In Norway, we call that a traffic machine. We used to have a three-level roundabout on a freeway in Oslo, but it was demolished and the freeway put in a tunnel.
Giant roundabout in the sky is just such a good way to manage interchanges. I live in between two of them on SH2 in Te Awakairangi, and they are always free-flowing compared to all the others.
I think I have been through that one… I think it always dumps me out in entirely the wrong lane.
I have one sibling near Britomart and one in Parnell, and the double off-ramp with the traffic light after a tight bend often gets the best of my maps app.
We have this shocker near us. Slip road on ramp, houses between the lane and the motorway. This is about the point you have any idea if there’s traffic approaching.
Most people sensibly act like there’s a 🛑.
Just up from here there are two sets of lights. Yes. Lights. On a 100km/h motorway.
Yes, lovely long swoops was my impression of it too. And the lovely alternating lights to tell cars whose turn it is to merge. So very sensible. Petone and Ngauranga interchanges 60-70% of drivers seem convinced they should go straight from the start of the merge lane into the fast lane.
I’ve been in the car with people who are totally freaked out by it, and yet, as long as you keep an eye on the arrows on the green signs above each lane well in advance, you get to where you’re going, and I’m never quite sure which bit was spaghetti. 😅
I go through it regularly (almost daily) on the motorcycle, and once you learn where you need to be in terms of lanes, the swooping long ramps are actually lovely.
Yeah I used to drive through it semi-regularly thinking “I must remember to pay attention when I get to it” and then always went past it without noticing
I think in my case it helped that I’d driven in Paris and Amsterdam and across swathes of Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg before I drove in Auckland for the first time.

I wonder what they’d make of spaghetti junction…

And I used to live at the location circled in red :)
